Olympique Lyonnais general manager Claude Puel was put through an emotional rollercoaster on Saturday night as his side defeated Nancy 3-2, but he was ultimately satisfied by les Gones’ work.
Lyon moved somewhat undeservedly into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Lisandro Lopez and Jimmy Briand but some lamentable defending allowed the home team to level up. With time running out, Briand pounced on an error at the other end of the field to score what proved the winning goal.
“That will do us some good,” said the under pressure boss, according to Ligue 1’s official website. “These are three important points for us. I’m not going to go on and on about it. The climate is what it is. The win is good for the squad. My personal case is not important.”
Puel has seen supporters of the club lobby for his resignation after a dire start to the season that saw Lyon rooted in the relegation zone after the first seven weeks of the campaign.
Meanwhile, ASNL’s Uruguayan coach, Pablo Correa, was distinctly unimpressed. “I can’t take any positives from this match,” he fumed. “We got back to 2-2, so what? At the end of the day it’s a defeat, just like the others. When we’re conceding nearly three goals a game, I say, no, no, and thrice no!”
The Lorraine club are now 18th, with Lyon moving up to 17th.
