Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez confirms Edinson Cavani injury not serious

The Napoli striker was replaced at half time after spraining his medial collateral ligament, and will now be a doubt for his national team's last group game

Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani is a doubt for his nation's final Copa America group game against Mexico, after the 24-year-old was replaced at half-time in the 1-1 draw against Chile after picking up an injury.

National team coach Oscar Tabarez has confirmed the extent of the problem, and will hope to have the Napoli striker fit and ready for the remainder of the tournament.

"The diagnosis is a sprained medial collateral ligament that will take a few days of recovery," the trainer stated at a news conference after the game.

Alexis Sanchez equalised for Claudio Borghi's side after a Alvaro Pereira strike had given Uruguay the lead, and the 64-year-old felt it was a game fitting of the tournament.

"It was a very intense match. The teams alternated in the dominance of actions, both have players who can hurt on attack. Both [sides] left everything on the pitch looking for the result.

"Chile had the better ball handling style, [and] asserted it at times. It was a match worthy of the Copa America," the experienced coach continued.

The tactician was also grateful for the efforts of his goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who made a vital save in the second half.

"We made mistakes, as [in] every game and some can [be] expensive. Muslera saved us from [conceding] a goal, and showed quality, which had an impact on the score," he concluded.

Uruguay play their all important last group game against Mexico in La Plata on Wednesday.
