Wolfsburg's Marcel Schafer signs two-year contract extension

The 27-year-old left-back played a major role in the Wolves' 2008-09 Bundesliga triumph and he's agreed an extension hoping to recreate that campaign under Felix Magath

Wolfsburg have handed captain Marcel Schafer a two-year contract extension until 2014.

The 27-year-old left-back's contract was due to expire in 2012 but the two parties have agreed to an extension which Schafer told the club's website he was happy to sign.

"I am delighted to remain with VfL Wolfsburg,” said Schafer. “I owe a lot to the club and coach Felix Magath - and I've always said that my family and I feel very comfortable here.

“Also, I want to be successful with VfL in the coming years. I am confident that we can achieve it here."

Wolfsburg were German champions under Magath in 2009 before he moved to Schalke only to return to Volkswagen Arena in March this year.

Magath said he was delighted with the deal to secure Schafer's future at the club.

"The fact that Marcel is committed to VfL is very gratifying,” said Magath.

“He will shape the image of our team in the coming years. It is also important that after the many departures that one of the club's most successful players is staying with us."
