PSG's Mevlut Erding rejects Newcastle United

Deal dead in the water after player decides to remain in Paris, meaning club's efforts to replace Andy Carroll suffer further French frustration

Newcastle United have ended their pursuit of Mevlut Erding after failing with a €8.5 million bid to sign the Paris St. Germain striker.

The Premier League club lodged a formal bid to sign the 24-year-old Turkey international on Tuesday and it appeared a deal to sign the player was close.

But Erding has decided to remain in France despite Newcastle’s overtures after failing to agree personal terms in the North East.

Sources close to the deal insist that Newcastle were unable to lure French-born Erding to Tyneside because they were unable to meet his wage demands, even though the terms of the transfer were agreeable to PSG.

“They weren’t prepared to pay him what he wanted because they are trying to run a tight ship wage-wise and that’s why has decided to stay put.

“They are now scratching their heads as to what to do next because as far as I know they do not have a specific target in mind now the Erding deal has fallen through.

“But one thing is for sure - they will be sticking to their guns and going for a young, up-and-coming player.”

Erding’s agent, Pierre Frelot, has confirmed that the player would not be leaving PSG, where he has scored 22 goals in 51 appearances since leaving Sochaux two years ago.

“He will not be going to Newcastle,” Frelot said. “The player decided not to move and he is staying in Paris next season.”

The snub means that Newcastle still trying to fill the void left by the record-breaking £35m (€40m) sale of England striker Andy Carroll to Liverpool last January.

Erding’s decision is the second time this summer that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has failed to net a Ligue 1 striker after a €15.75m bid to sign Kevin Gameiro from Lorient ended in disappointment.

Pardew’s attacking options have been bolstered with the signing of Demba Ba from West Ham United, but the St. James’ Park boss will be keen to strengthen his forward line further before the club head off on a pre-season tour of the United States on July 17.

Newcastle could now turn to Reading and Republic of Ireland attacker Shane Long, who could cost the club around €5.5m.
