Manchester City Midfielder Nigel De Jong Begins Contract Extension Negotiations - Report

Manchester City are in negotiations to extend Nigel de Jong's contract despite the controversy surrounding his leg breaking challenge on Newcastle United's Hatem Ben Arfa, according to The Sun.

De Jong, 25, was removed from the Netherlands squad for their upcoming Euro 2012 qualifying double header after head coach Bert van Marwijk was angered by his thunderous tackle in the 2-1 weekend victory.

The criticism has not affected manager Roberto Mancini who has moved to improve the Ajax youth products £80,000 a week deal that runs until summer 2013.

After impressing since joining from Hamburg 18 months ago, the Italian sees De Jong as a vital part of his team as they aim for the Champions League qualifying places and Premier League title.
