Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel was delighted with his side's seventh straight win as the 'Oh Fives' matched the record feats of Bayern Munich in 1995-96 and Kaiserslautern in 2001-02.
Tuchel felt that Hoffenheim had made life difficult for his men in the opening period but that they improved considerably after the break.
"In the first half we lacked some confidence. Even the early opening goal didn't bring self-assurance. Hoffenheim presented us with big problems," he told Sky after the game.
"After the break, we played a lot better and were a consistent goal threat. During the game, I did not think about the record and even now it is not an issue for me."
Meanwhile, German national team coach Joachim Loew was present at the match and hailed Lewis Holtby's magnificent performance.
"His pass for the first goal was worth the entrance fee alone," Loew told Sky.
Mainz are six points clear of second placed Borussia Dortmund, who play Bayern Munich tomorrow in the Signal Iduna Park. The next fixture for the league leaders is in two weeks, when they host Hamburg.
