Julio Cesar Falcioni attempted to shift the pressure for Sunday's match onto River Plate, insisting that los Millonarios have the advantage when they visit his tired Banfield team this weekend.
Banfield slipped below River in the league standings last weekend as they lost their first match of the season, falling 1-0 to Argentinos Juniors in a surprise reverse. 'El Taladro' then recovered in midweek to take down Colombia's Deportes Tolima 2-0 at home, putting them in the driving seat for the Copa Sudamericana tie.
Ahead of his team's third match in a week though, Falcioni claimed that the weary legs of his players give Angel Cappa's side a distinct advantage come Sunday - and not for the first time.
"We take on a big rival on Sunday. Of course, River have the advantage of being rested, just like every time they take on a team that plays in the Sudamericana," he told the Argentine press. "It happened to them with Newell's [Old Boys] and with Velez [Sarsfield]," the tecnico stated with no little irony, shining a light on the kind fixture schedule the Nunez club had been dealt.
This is the fourth time that River have been drawn against a team which has had midweek fixtures, while they have always had a full week's rest. The results however have not pointed to Ariel Ortega and company benefiting from the draw: out of three previous games they have only managed one point in this situation, drawing against Argentinos.
Banfield and River take each other on in the Estadio Florencio Sola this Sunday, at 20:20 local time.
