Barcelona’s legendary figure Johan Cruyff has been critical of the Spanish Football Federation and coach Vicente del Bosque for arranging friendlies in Argentina and Mexico that have given players additional fatigue during an already intense calendar.
La Furia Roja were involved in two long-haul trips in two consecutive months, and the Blaugrana have lost key playmaker Xavi to tendonitis as a result of a concentrated number of matches taking their toll.
Speaking in his weekly column in El Periodico de Catalunya, he remarked: “It is unacceptable that, without any preparation, the team are expected to travel to Mexico to play in a friendly with the Spanish team, and then from Mexico to Argentina to play in another friendly.
“It is foolish to have these games in the calendar when there is no World Cup next year. Just look at the timetable and ensure that those who propose these matches care in who actually plays.”
Cruyff also questioned why the Spanish Super Cup, which kicks off the league season, is played over two legs instead of a straightforward, winner-takes-all encounter.
He added: “Why is the Super Cup organised for two games? It is enough. Why have a cup played for across two matches? One match would make it more fun and will give players more rest."
