GENOA
Amelia: 7 - Was reduced to the role of a spectator in the first half and other than a weak effort from Cassano in the second 45 minutes, he didn’t have much to do.
Biava: 5 - Seemed to enjoy grinding Cassano’s gears as he gave him the roughhouse treatment in the early going until he picked up a yellow card in the 27th minute. He was then sent off for foolishly using his hand to stop the ball just before the stroke of half-time.
Moretti: 7.5 - Didn’t put a foot wrong all match long and will hold his head up high after keeping Cassano and Pazzini off the scoresheet.
Bocchetti: 7 - Made some vital blocks in the first half and was calm and composed throughout a fiery encounter.
Juric: 7 - The Croatian defender’s name was hardly called during the match, which is not a bad thing for a defensive full-back.
Milanetto: 8 - Made no mistake from the spot in what was a pressure charged penalty in the early going. Got caught up in some tomfoolery with Cassano but kept his head and it was his delightful ball that set up Rossi’s goal.
Criscito: 7.5 - He flexed his muscles throughout the match with some devastating tackles and almost found the back of the net with a powerful header that hit the crossbar. Harassed and harangued Cassano and will be proud of his effort tonight.
Rossi: 7.5 - The Genoa captain’s goal broke Sampdoria's and he will be delighted with the team's effort tonight.
Sculli: 8 - The Calabrese forward was involved in every dangerous attack that Genoa mustered. He set up Palacio to win the penalty and sent in a low cross that Ziegler cleared off his own post.
Palladino: 7 - It took a little while for the winger to get into the game but he eventually scored from the penalty spot but celebrated a little too emphatically in front of the Samp fans which caused the Blucerchiati players to react angrily.
Palacio: 8 - The much-maligned striker picked an opportune time to have his best match for the Grifoni as he was a constant threat and won the penalty that set up Genoa’s first goal of the match. Had to be substituted right before the half because of injury.
Substitutes
Papastathopoulos: 7 - Won the penalty that put the match to bed.
Floccari: 6.5 - Showed some nice touches but would have loved to score in his first city derby for Genoa
Crespo: NA – Made a cameo appearance.
SAMPDORIA
Castellazzi: 7 - Made a couple of stupendous saves to keep the scoreline respectable. Was let down by his defence in front of him.
Cacciatore: 5 - Was slow pushing up and kept the Samp forwards onside on a couple of occasions, most notably Sculli in the 37th minute. His derby day debacle was complete when he was given his marching orders three minutes from time.
Rossi: 4 - Effectively killed his side’s chances of making a comeback when he picked up his second yellow card for a foolish foul on the halfway line.
Gastaldello: 5.5 - The best of the bunch for a sorry Samp back line. Lost his cool when Palladino celebrated in front of Sampdoria’s section of fans.
Ziegler: 3 - It was an absolute horror show for the full-back tonight as he conceded two penalties and almost scored an own-goal.
Padalino: 5 - Could not create any danger on the flanks and was hooked in the second half for his ineffective performance.
Palombo: 5 - Samp’s midfielder hard man was atrocious in the first 45 minutes. This writer lost track of the times he gave away possession cheaply. Started the second half off brightly but reverted back to his old ways after Rossi’s goal.
Poli: 5 - The youngster was substituted early in the second half after failing to make any sort of impression on the match.
Mannini: 5 - Might have been his worst performance for the Blucerchiati since coming over from Napoli. Went to ground much too easily and offered nothing going forward.
Cassano: 6 - Pulled the strings for Samp tonight but failed to keep his emotions in check in what was a fiery derby.
Pazzini: 5.5 - Was anonymous for large chunks of the match and did not pose a threat to the Genoa backline at all.
Substitutes
Tissone: 5.5 - Couldn’t engineer a comeback after Samp had fell two goals behind and was lucky that the referee did not spot his wild two footed tackle.
Pozzi: 5 – Was as effective as Padalino which isn’t saying much.
Accardi: 6 – Failed to provide a spark from the bench.
