Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi has insisted that it is imperative the team manage to finish top of their Europa League group after narrowly defeating Club Brugge 2-1 on Thursday evening.
The Yellow Submarines notched their first victory in Group D thanks to goals from defender Gonzalo Rodriguez and Rossi himself, who opened the scoring in the first half.
Despite the home side not having things all their own way, they managed to clinch a vital three points, and the Italian believes that top spot should now be at the forefront of their thoughts to ensure a more favourable draw in the next stage.
He said to journalists at El Madrigal afterwards: “It is important to finish top of the group. The next game against PAOK will be crucial. In this game we have suffered a bit, but the team is very happy with the outcome.
“We were unlucky with the goal that we have conceded, but we reacted well in the second half. The truth is that the game was a bit strange because of injuries and the red card [shown to Club Brugge’s Ronald Vargas], but these things happen in football. The team has looked superior in the end.”
