Stuttgart's troubles continued this afternoon as the Swabians lost 2-0 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. The hosts played well in spells, but were three times denied by the post and once more by the referee, but suffered for their poor defensive concentration. The loss puts the job of Stuttgart coach Christian Gross in severe jeopardy as his club have taken just three points from their first seven matches.
An opportunistic goal from Theofanis Gekas put Frankfurt ahead early, and Chris doubled the visitors' advantage midway through the second half. Moments after Matthieu Delpierre was sent off, Pavel Pogrebnyak pulled one back for the hosts, setting up a nail-biter of a finale. Cacau had looked to have equalised late, but his seemingly legitimate goal was called back for offside, and the visitors earned a narrow victory.
In the 18th minute, a lazy throw-in bounced twice in the penalty area before Gekas swooped in and tapped home from close range. The Greek striker's goal came not long after Christian Traesch scored a "Wembley goal," firing a long-ranged blast off the crossbar and onto the goal line before being cleared. Pavel Pogrebnyak also had a good chance miss wide and Cacau forced a fine save, but the hosts were made to pay for their inefficiency.
In the second half, Traesch missed an open volley before Frankfurt began a rather dominant spell that led to the second goal. After Patrick Ochs had successive opportunities blocked and saved, Chris nodded in well from a corner.
Late in the game, Ciprian Marica missed a clear chance from 12 yards before Pogrebnyak and Arthur Boka had efforts rattle the woodwork. With six minutes left, captain Matthieu Delpierre received his marching order for a terrible challenge on Ochs. Moments later, Pogrebnyak and Cacau scored in rapid succession, but the latter's effort was inexplicably ruled offside, and Frankfurt held on for three points.
The result leaves Stuttgart in last place in the Bundesliga on three points. Frankfurt, meanwhile, climb into 14th place, having managed six points from seven matches.
