Atletico Madrid midfielder Tiago has conceded that the team’s performance in the Europa League so far haven’t merited any more than the single point that they have received from their two matches played.
A weak display in Greece saw Aris Thessaloniki defeat them 1-0, while on Thursday evening they needed a penalty from Simao to rescue a point against Bayer Leverkusen.
In a press conference this afternoon, the Portuguese international said he is aware that the standard they have produced in defence of their trophy has not been good enough, granting: “It is true that we have no done well in both matches. We have a point and it is what we deserve because we have not played well enough.
“It is difficult to explain. We went in with the same attitude, to go for the game, but the start has been bad and we have ultimately not been successful.”
Star striker Diego Forlan was removed by coach Quique Sanchez Flores at half-time, a decision that he was noticeably disgruntled with, and Tiago admitted that he sympathised with his team-mate but that he must respect the coach’s decision.
He observed: “We played to win, but we did not get it. We did not produce a good first half, and the coach wanted a change. Nobody likes to go off at the break, and I think that Forlan didn’t either, but he didn’t play well in the match and coach took him off.”
