Bologna and Sampdoria could not determine a winner in a tightly contested affair on a fine Sunday afternoon. Daniele Portanova scored an own goal in the dying minutes of the first half to give the visitors the lead, but Miguel Britos restored parity in the second half to earn a draw for the hosts.
The game started quietly with neither team in any hurry to charge forward. The hosts were the better team in the first ten minutes and had a goal by Riccardo Meggiorini disallowed for offside in the 8th minute, following a through-ball by Marco Di Vaio.
Moments later it was Antonio Cassano who had a chance to score, but his right footed shot from near the penalty spot was saved by Emiliano Viviano in the bottom right corner. A minute late the striker saw a drive from outside the box fly narrowly wide of the top right corner.
The best chance for Bologna came in the 36th minute when Daniele Portanova flashed his header from the centre of the box wide of the left post, following a cross by Luca Siligardi from a free-kick outside the box.
Daniele Portanova, however, managed to score with a header in injury time, but in his own net. Franco Semioli received the ball on the right side of the box, near the byline, and whipped in a cross, which the defender deflected past his goalkeeper at the near post. Moments earlier Cassano saw a shot blocked at the goal line by Mateo Rubin, with Emiliano Viviano beaten.
Sampdoria started the second half with more urgency in attack and almost doubled their advantage on the break in the 55th minute when Cassano was released through on goal by Semioli, but finished wide of the left post.
A minute latter another counter-attack, initiated by Semioli and Cassano, could have resulted in a goal, had it not been for Gyorgy Garics wonderful interception to in the six-yard box.
Bologna struggled to create anything of note after the break, until the 65th minute when Miguel Britos stabbed the ball into the left corner from inside the box, following a cross by Di Vaio from a free-kick around 35 yards from goal.
This goal certainly came against the run of play as Sampdoria seemed likely to score in the minutes before the equaliser. Neither side managed to score before the final whistle and the game ended in a draw.
Today's game sees Bologna climb to twelfth, while the visitors are eleventh. Sampdoria host Fiorentina in two weeks, while the Felsinei visit Palermo on the same day.
