Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 Werder Bremen: Late Derdiyok Strike Denies Visitors' Victory

Werder Bremen battled back from an early deficit to earn a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen. The result was less than ideal for the visitors, but will take some pressure off the shoulders of under-fire coach Thomas Schaaf, whose team has struggled this season.

Leverkusen were the better team in the first half, and took the lead on 16 minutes as Patrick Helmes finished from a tight angle after being released by Tranquillo Barnetta. After the break, Hugo Almeida leveled with an excellent free kick, and Marko Marin netted the go-ahead goal in transition. Stunned, Leverkusen mounted a comeback, and earned a point thanks to substitute Eren Derdiyok, who netted with 12 minutes left.

Their point brings Leverkusen back into fourth place in the Bundesliga standings, though they now are nine behind leaders Mainz. Bremen, meanwhile, are 13th, with eight points from seven matches.
