Will Arsenal finally end their wait to lift the Premier League title this season? The statstics look like Arsene Wenger's men already have one hand on the trophy.

Five of the last six teams who ended the calendar year in top spot went on to win the trophy - with Arsenal the one team who threw it away after a promising start.

In the 2013-14 campaign, Arsenal ended the year one point clear of City but went on to finish in fourth place, seven points behind Manuel Pellegrini's champions.

Before Arsenal, you have to go back as far as 2008 to find another team who threw it away after Christmas.

Liverpool, under the guidance of Rafa Benitez, ended the year three points clear of Chelsea, but Manchester United, who were seven behind at the end of December, had a storming second half of the campaign and finished four points clear as champions.
