Wigan Manager Roberto Martinez Delighted After Claiming Three Points Against 10-Man Wolves

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez was delighted with his side’s performance against ten man Wolverhampton Wanderders, as the Latics made their way into the top half of the Premier League.

The Spaniard spoke to Sky Sports after the game about the importance about the fixture, which he said: “It was a huge victory, it was a game that was very important to whoever would manage to win the three points and that was us.

"I think that the most pleasing aspect that we learnt that against Sunderland we played against tem men and we got frustrated.”

He continued, expressing his pride in his player’s performance, saying: “I am just so proud of the players and how they played in the second half, it was a real pleasure to see how we played as a team creating chance after chance.

"I don’t think we are experienced enough [to play against ten men] yet to know how to play in these situations and how to take advantage. That’s the way we finished the first half, but in the second half I was extremely proud.

"As a young dressing room, they understand what they had to do, they were generous in the last third and patient."

Midfielder Jordi Gomez was singled out by the gaffer, who remarked: “The first goal was a real bit of brilliance from Jordi, but overall the performance, to keep Wolves to just one free kick and that’s the hardest thing in football.”

On the major incident of the game were Gomez was fouled by Karl Henry, who was subsequently sent off, leading Martinez to say: “It was very unfortunate, straight away I felt that it was a broken leg because of how reckless it was and you just want to see you player get up, he was very, very fortunate.

"After that it didn’t want to see the sending off because as a team everyone wants to see you win."

"When Martinez was asked if he had seen a worse tackle he responded: “Not at the DW stadium, probably because of the position, it was probably 10 yards from me and even the noise of knee on shin pad made it a nasty moment but those things happen in the game and you get the red card and we took advantage out of it.

"In football you can make a decision to be a bit physical, if you get the ball great but if you don’t get the ball you expect to be sent off and in that situation. I’m sure Mick McCarthy is disappointed with his player because he left his team with big task."
