Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David de Gea has dismissed reports linking him with a move to English Premier League giants Manchester United, saying that he is currently happy at the Vicente Calderon.
Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson has reportedly eyed the 19-year-old glovesman as his long-term replacement for Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford and is readying a €14 million swoop in the summer.
However, speaking to journalists today, De Gea quashed those rumours, saying that if he remains motivated to continue playing for los Colchoneros, he will never have a desire to move on.
He told journalists in this afternoon’s press conference: “I appreciate that the big clubs of the world care about me, but I am very happy here. If you’re comfortable at a club, why would you change it?
“I want to keep growing here. I still have many things to do. I love to play in these colours, and want to enjoy more moments like those I have, and help the team as much as possible. I want to spend many years here.”
De Gea also spoke of Spain coach Vicente del Bosque’s recent remarks regarding him receiving a call-up to the full national side in the near future, and spoke highly of the three shot-stoppers currently ahead of him.
He continued: “They [Iker Casillas, Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina] are the three best goalkeepers at the moment. In Valdes, his highlight is one-on-ones, Casillas has almost everything, while Reina has plenty of power and agility.”
The emerging talent also recently celebrated his first anniversary in the first team of Atleti, and reflected on the events that have transpired since his ascent to the number one jersey, saying: “It has been very nice and an important year in my career. Playing in the shirt of Atletico Madrid was my dream. Everything happened so fast, and I have not had time to take it all in. I’m really enjoying everything that has happened to me.”
