A first-half strike from Daniele Corvia saw Lecce carve out a 1-0 win against Catania at the Stadio Via del Mare in Serie A on Sunday afternoon to move further away from the relegation zone.
It was the Lupi's second home win of the season and impeded the Sicilians from going level on points with league leaders Milan at the top of the table for a few hours at least.
Catania crafted the first chance of the match as early as the fifth minute when Maxi Lopez was sent through by Giuseppe Mascara but his right-footed shot from the centre of the Lecce box was saved by goalkeeper Antonio Rosati.
Seven minutes later the hosts had their chance when Ruben Olivera took an attempt on the Catania goal from outside the box but it was saved by Mariano Andujar. Lecce came close to breaking the deadlock around the half-hour mark when Corvia's shot went just wide of the right post.
However, the 25-year-old did find the target with nine minutes of the first-half remaining when he slotted home a deflected cross from the left wing from close range.
Catania continued to push forward in search of an equaliser and came agonisingly close midway through the second-half when sent through on goal by Mascara, Mariano Izco struck the right post from a difficult angle.
Alessandro Potenza and Alejandro Gomez subsequently came close to restoring parity for the Sicilians but failed, meaning that now Lecce and Catania have eight points each after six rounds of matches in the Italian top flight.
