Brazil legend Zico has made the decision to leave his post as technical director at Flamengo with immediate effect. The 57-year-old only started the job four months ago.
A number of recent reports suggested that Zico's sons, Junior and Bruno Coimbra, were involved in the transfers of a number of Flamengo players, thus taking advantage of the position of Zico at the Rubro-Negro.
"Gradually, the love between Zico and Flamengo has been fading in the past couple of weeks. I'm afraid that my connection with the club could be lost forever," reads an emotional statement from Zico on the club's official website.
The Brazil legend further explained his decision on his personal website.
"My presence at the club has not been the success I was hoping for. Several people have become far from satisfied since my arrival here and I can't continue to work here under the current conditions," explained Zico.
"I'm being attacked unfairly and so are my children. They have never been involved in anything that wasn't ethical. Respect and honesty are very important for me and I cannot let this happen to my family.
"I'd like to thank president Patricia Amorim for giving me the chance to work here. We wanted to make a number of changes here that we feel like are absolutely necessary, but it was not working out."
