Wolfsburg Coach Steve McClaren: Every Bundesliga Game Is Like A Cup Final

Wolfsburg coach Steve McClaren has compared the English game to the Bundesliga, stating that football enjoys the same revered status in the two countries. He also highlighted the intensity of the Bundesliga, comparing every game to a cup final.

"In principle, both leagues are very similar. The Bundesliga is very difficult and in Germany there are eight to ten teams who can compete for the title. The Bundesliga thrives on its high intensity and each game must be considered like a cup final. Football in Germany has a similar status in society to that in England," he told Borussia Moenchengladbach's official website.

McClaren had enjoyed a great deal of success in Enschede with FC Twente, leading them to the Dutch title as well as a runners-up spot in his two seasons with the Tukkers. However, he wanted a new challenge in Germany.

"I could have played in the Champions League with Twente, but I had the feeling that it was time for something new. Wolfsburg have big ambitions and in Dieter Hoeness a figure at the top who wants to achieve these."

Wolfsburg have won three successive games and travel tomorrow to Moenchengladbach to take on die Fohlen. They are sixth in the standings, 10 places above their struggling opponents.
