Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has called up four replacements to his international squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Lithuania and Scotland, after a number of players withdrew from his squad through injury.
Valencia duo Aritz Aduriz and Pablo Hernandez and Villarreal pairing Borja Valero and Bruno Soriano have been introduced to the squad, with Aduriz and Valero celebrating their maiden call-ups to the senior squad.
Del Bosque’s initial selection has been riddled by injuries; Xavi and Cesc Fabregas were omitted due to tendonitis and an ankle knock respectively, but over the course of the weekend’s action, the list of absentees continues to grow.
Fernando Torres limped out of Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Blackpool with a groin complaint, Barcelona winger Pedro Rodriguez sustained a hamstring injury in the 1-1 draw with Mallorca at the Camp Nou, while Jesus Navas will also miss out.
The former Real Madrid coach had hoped that if Fabregas had played any part in his side’s match with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, he would be in a position to call him into the squad, but he did not feature, leading Del Bosque to look elsewhere for his replacements.
Spain play Lithuania on Friday evening in Salamanca, before travelling to Glasgow to face Scotland on October 12.
