Outspoken Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini has launched a stinging attack on referee Mario Mazzoleni and urged the Italian FA to blood in new officials.
The entrepreneur is furious after his side suffered a 1-0 loss to Chievo Verona in Serie A yesterday and insisted the dismissal of playmaker Fabio Liverani for a second bookable offence was key to their debacle.
“Palermo did not deserve to lose,” he said to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Chievo didn’t do much more than we did. But the worst of all was referee Mazzoleni. He is not good enough.
“Liverani’s red card is a huge mistake that will deprive us of an important player against Cagliari.
“I have re-watched the incident three times and the second yellow is a fabrication. Mazzoleni must be pensioned off. It’s been a while since he got something right.
“It’s high time they put faith in young referees.”
Palermo welcome in-form Cagliari at the Barbera next weekend after the Sardinians claimed a stunning 2-0 win over Juventus yesterday.
