Saint-Etienne custodian Jeremie Janot was fulsome in his praise for Olympique de Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda after the two sides drew 1-1 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Saturday evening.
Both men may have conceded once, but equally they produced an array of fine stops, with the best perhaps being Mandanda’s fingertip save from Blaise Matuidi in the last minute of the match.
“Steve delayed the equaliser and if he did not make the amazing save at the end we would have won the game,” Janot told Orange Sport. “He is a cat.”
Andre-Pierre Gignac opened the scoring for les Phoceens midway through the first half but a powerful half volley struck by Laurent Batlles early in the second half for Sainte drew the scores level. Les Verts, who still top Ligue 1, were the better team in the closing stages but could not find the winning goal.
