Espanyol defender Ernesto Galan’s worst fears have been realised after he received confirmation he suffered a broken leg in the 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad on Saturday evening.
In a close-fought encounter at San Sebastian, the centre-back attempted to slide in and nick the ball clear and out of play on the half-hour mark, but his leg folded awkwardly underneath him, and he immediately had to be replaced.
The injury has today been confirmed as a break of the right fibula, and the Madrid-born former Girona defender will be required to undergo a series of tests in order to determine the period of rehabilitation from the blow.
After the match, coach Mauricio Pochettino praised the performance of the team despite their defeat, and paid tribute to Galan, while lamenting the loss of one his most consistent defenders.
Galan has only just returned from suspension, following his controversial red card for a challenge on Cristiano Ronaldo during the 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid a fortnight ago.
