The need to confirm the position of Nigeria’s chief coach has been emphasised by former international Henry Nwosu, who has asked that interim coach Austin Eguavoen be allowed to continue in the position which he has held since after the World Cup.
Eguavoen was appointed in his present capacity after the unimpressive showing of the country at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa where they were coached by Swedish tactician Lars Lagerback.
Speaking to The Punch, Nwosu said that Eguavoen has done a good job so far and ought to be put in full charge of the team going into the next qualifying game for the 2012 African Nations Cup against Guinea in Conakry on October 10.
“One thing that has impressed me most is the manner in which he introduced the home-based players to the team in their first match,” Nwosu said.
The Nigerians lost their first match 2-1 to South Korea in a friendly match, but the Super Eagles defeated Madagascar 2-0 in Abuja on September to lead their qualifying group for the AFCON.
“We should not criticise him in this period because he needs to focus on how to further improve the team. He needs encouragement from the NFF and other coaches who may have a few things to contribute as the team play the qualification matches,” Nwosu added.
