David Weir Dismayed By Rangers' European Elimination

Veteran defender David Weir believes he and his Rangers colleagues got exactly what they deserved after another disappointing home European performance, a 2-0 defeat by Stuttgart.

The reverse means Rangers cannot progress beyond the group stages of the Champions League, and neither will they be able to finish third in Group G and the consolation of a passage into the Europa League.

With his side outclassed by their German counterparts, 39-year-old Weir told Sky Sports: "I'm disappointed - we weren't good enough again tonight.

"We didn't play well enough, didn't put enough into the game and got what we deserved.

"It's a hard level to play at and we realise we've got to be better."

The experienced centre-back was optimistic that some good could come from the defeat however, with his defensive partner Danny Wilson just 17 but performing admirably in place of the dropped Madjid Bougherra.

"We've got to take positives from it," added Weir.

"Lads are getting good experience, we've got to get better and learn from the experience.”

The former Everton man spoke of his desire to put the disappointment behind him and concentrate on the weekend’s game in the Scottish Premier League.

He said: "It's a tough lesson but we've got a big game on Saturday morning against Aberdeen."
