David Moyes have expressed his relief after leading Everton to their first victory of the season and has targeted his team to finish in the top half of the Premier League.
A win victory had eluded Everton for six games prior to their match against Birmingham City but a Roger Johnson own goal and a late trademark header by the inspirational Tim Cahill secured the three points for Moyes’s men.
“Players played well today especially as Birmingham had a really good home record,” said Moyes.
“The first half was pleasing and how we haven’t scored three or four goals is beyond me.
“I’m not exactly jumping around over the result as I expect us to win more games.
“People have been saying that our performances haven’t merited our position but today we got our reward.
“We have taken four points from two difficult games at Fulham and Birmingham - teams I expect to finish in the top half - so I am quite pleased.
“We tried to play good football and we will look to go into the next game and try to win again.”
Moyes revealed Cahill was a doubt for the game at St Andrews but the midfielder’s contribution was significant in Saturday’s victory. The Everton manager also praised fellow midfielder Leon Osman, who assisted the Australian’s goal.
“He [Tim Cahill] was a doubt for game today as he knee is not quite right- he didn’t train all week but we couldn’t take him off in the second half,” Moyes said.
“He [Leon Osman] played well today, popped up in good places and obviously created the goal.”
One drawback for Moyes has been the injury to Steven Pienaar, and the Everton manager expects the midfielder not to return until after the international break.
“Steven [Pienaar] looks set to be out for two to four weeks as he pulled his groin on Wednesday. We have got the international break now but he looks unlikely to play in our next game but he will not need to have surgery,” said Moyes.
